TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTICS IN LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO
Find Out What’s Actually Wrong—Before Anyone Talks Rebuild
Transmissions are what we’re known for. It’s in our name, it’s what we’ve built our reputation on, and it’s why drivers across St. Charles County come to us when something feels wrong. But here’s what surprises people: a transmission problem doesn’t automatically mean a rebuild. Sometimes it’s low or degraded fluid. Sometimes it’s a solenoid, a sensor, or an electrical fault masquerading as a mechanical failure. A proper diagnostic tells you which situation you’re actually in—and at Advance Transmissions & Complete Auto Care, you’ll get that answer straight, even when the honest answer is the less expensive one.
Signs Your Transmission Needs A Diagnostic
- Slipping—the engine revs but the vehicle doesn’t accelerate as it should
- Hard, jerky, or delayed shifting between gears
- A pause before the vehicle engages when you shift into Drive or Reverse
- Grinding, whining, humming, or clunking sounds
- Reddish fluid spots under where you park
- A burning smell after driving
- A check engine light, or the vehicle stuck in a single gear (“limp mode”)
Catching these early is the difference between a manageable repair and a major one. Transmission problems rarely improve on their own—they compound.
What Our Transmission Diagnostic Involves
A real transmission diagnostic is more than plugging in a scanner. Ours includes:
- Retrieving and interpreting transmission-specific trouble codes
- Checking fluid level, color, and condition—often the first clue
- A road test to feel exactly how and when the problem appears
- Inspecting for leaks, damaged lines, and worn mounts
- Testing electrical components, solenoids, and sensors
- A clear, plain-language explanation of what we found and what it will take to fix it
Repair, Rebuild, Or Replace?
Once we know the real cause, there are generally three paths—and they differ enormously in cost, so the diagnosis matters. A transmission repair addresses a specific failed component while the unit stays largely intact. A transmission rebuild means removing the unit, disassembling it, and replacing worn internal parts—the right call when damage is extensive. A transmission replacement swaps in a different unit entirely, which sometimes makes the most sense for the vehicle’s age and value.
We’ll tell you honestly which one your vehicle needs. And because a transmission code can sometimes trace back to something else entirely, we also handle engine diagnostics and electrical diagnostics in the same shop—so the problem gets solved in one place. If your vehicle isn’t safe to drive in, ask about our free towing offer on qualifying major repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Transmission Diagnostics
Does a transmission problem always mean I need a rebuild?
No—and we’ll tell you when it doesn’t. Plenty of transmission symptoms trace back to fluid condition, a solenoid, a sensor, or an electrical fault. A proper diagnostic identifies the real cause first, so you only pay for the work your vehicle actually needs.
What are the most common signs of transmission trouble?
Slipping between gears, hard or delayed shifting, grinding or whining sounds, reddish fluid under the vehicle, a burning smell, or the vehicle getting stuck in one gear. Any of these is worth having checked promptly.
Can I keep driving with a slipping transmission?
We’d strongly advise against it. Driving on a failing transmission generates heat and metal debris that can turn a moderate repair into a full rebuild. If it’s slipping badly or stuck in limp mode, ask us about towing rather than driving it in.
What does a transmission diagnostic include?
We scan for transmission-specific codes, check fluid level and condition, road test the vehicle to reproduce the symptom, inspect for leaks, and test the electrical components and solenoids—then explain exactly what we found.
How long does a transmission diagnostic take?
Most diagnostics are completed the same day, though a road test and deeper testing can extend that. We’ll give you a timeframe and a price before we begin. Book your transmission diagnostic here.
